Teenager Carlos Alcaraz eliminates Stefanos Tsitsipas in marathon match | Tennis

Alcaraz started the game very energetically and showed his opponent all corners of the track. Faultless – on a just not successful tweener after – he played tennis to a 3-0 lead and although Tsitsipas recovered slightly, the Greek never really came back into the set.

The Spaniard also quickly made it 3-0 in the second set, but this time Tsitsipas’ recovery was better. He fought back nicely and won the set, after which he also seemed to cross the line fairly quickly. But then it was up to Alcaraz to show his comeback skills. He survived three set points and a very long game on his own serve, only to win the tiebreak.

It seemed as if Alcaraz had gone a little too fanatically in his comeback, because in the fourth set he didn’t give up at all. Without giving up a game, Tsitsipas tied the score again. Alcaraz recovered well in the fifth set, which headed straight for a decisive tiebreak. In it, the youngster showed some of his best game at times and beat Tsitsipas. After he just didn’t use his second match point, Alcaraz hit the mark in attempt number three. He reports to the last sixteen of the tournament.

Koolhof and Rojer in two sets by

For 40-year-old Rojer, it was his first competition since his positive corona test during the Olympic Games. The doubles specialist had to withdraw together with Koolhof and was quarantined for two weeks in a corona hotel in Tokyo. Koolhof was forced to play with other partners in the run-up to the last grand slam tournament of the year.

Koolhof and Rojer are placed tenth in New York. Koolhof reached the final of the US Open last year with the Croatian Nikola Mektic, Rojer won the tournament in 2017 together with Horia Tecau.

Robin Haase did not manage to survive the first round of the doubles. Together with his American partner Mackenzie McDonald, he lost 5-7 6-3 6-2 to Mexican Santiago Gonzalez and Andrés Molteni from Argentina. The match was stopped earlier in the week after Haase and McDonald had won the first set.

Matwé Middelkoop was also eliminated in three sets. With Marcelo Arévalo, he suffered a narrow defeat to Americans Steve Johnson and Sam Querrey. It was 6-7 (4) 6-4 7-6 (3) for Johnson/Querrey.

Medvedev simply continue

Daniil Medvedev has convincingly advanced to the eighth finals at the US. He defeated Pablo Andujar 6-0, 6-4, 6-3 in three sets.

Medvedev’s start in particular was convincing. He won the first set in no time without losing a game. After that it was a little less easy, but in the end Andujar never really got a foothold.

Muguruza beats Azarkena

Viktoria Azarenka – last year’s losing finalist – has been eliminated from the US Open. Garbine Muguruza defeated the Belarusian 6-4, 3-6, 6-2.

By making it to the fourth round, Muguruza equals her best performance in New York. She has already won Wimbledon and Roland Garros, but on the American hard court, the Spanish only reached the last sixteen in 2017.

Muguruza will face the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the surprising winner of Roland Garros, in the next round.

Angelique Kerber has also reached the fourth round of the US Open after a fierce battle with Sloane Stephens. She defeated the American in three sets: 5-7, 6-2, 6-3.

Halep hard

Simona Halep has reached the fourth round of the US Open with pain and difficulty. Against Elena Rybakina she needed three sets 7-6 (11), 4-6 and 6-3.

Simona Halep

The first set in particular was a real fight with a very long tiebreak, which the Romanian eventually won 13-11. Rybakina then fought back nicely in set two, but eventually had to give in.

Halep will face Elina Svitolina in the fourth round. She defeated Daria Kasatkina in 6-4, 6-2.
