Erik ten Hag said before the match that he wanted to take revenge with Ajax for the shameful defeat (4-0) against PSV in the Johan Cruijff Scale and got his way completely. The match against the direct competitor turned out to be a topper only on paper, because the difference in power between the title rivals was unprecedented in the Johan Cruijff Arena: 5-0.
Afterwards, Ten Hag especially praised Sébastien Haller and Steven Berghuis, the makers of the first two Amsterdam goals. “Sébastien has been criticized unheard of,” Ten Hag told ESPN. ,,I already said to him: stay calm and make it happen. Mentally, Sébastien is very strong. He makes it happen. It’s so hard to play against him. He has more technique than anyone suspects and is a real finisher.”
Van Berghuis, who opened the score after a difficult initial phase, had also enjoyed Ten Hag. “I am very happy with what he is showing. A number of our players had a hard time before half-time, especially on the ball. Everything Steven does hits the mark. He is ballistic. He’s playing great at the moment. It’s fantastic to see him. And it is also nice for him to experience this.”
Although Ajax won with large numbers, Ten Hag was critical of the way his team had started the match. ,,We really had to fight in the first fifteen minutes. But that is also good for a team, that they feel what that is like.”
,,Again Remko Pasveer dragged us through that phase”, he complimented his keeper. ,,The opening goal of Steven Berghuis was a picture, after that it got easier. Until the 1-0 the opponent still believed in it, after the 2-0 it was done.”
