“I have been diagnosed with stage 1 ovarian cancer,” Evert wrote in a statement on Twitter. “I’m lucky they discovered it early. I expect positive results from my chemotherapy.” Her younger sister Jeanne died in early 2020 at the age of 62 from ovarian cancer. With Jeanne Evert this was only discovered at a late stage.
Evert dominated women’s tennis in the 70s and 80s together with Martina Navratilova. She won eighteen grand slam titles, most of which at Roland Garros: seven. The American has also won six times at the US Open, three times at Wimbledon and won the Australian Open twice. In total, she won no fewer than 157 titles on the WTA Tour. Evert closed the year as number 1 in the world seven times.
