Tennis players Paula Badosa and Madison Keys go to Melbourne for the Australian Open with a tournament victory. The Spanish won the WTA tournament in Sydney. Keys was the best in Adelaide.
The 24-year-old Badosa defeated the Czech Barbora Krejcikova, the number 4 in the world, in the final in three sets. The decision came in the tiebreak: 6-3 4-6 7-6 (4). For the Spanish number 9 in the world, it meant her third title on the WTA Tour. Last year she won the Belgrade and Indian Wells tournaments. Badosa also qualified for the WTA Finals in Mexico, where she made the final four.
Keys convincingly won the American meeting with Alison Riske in the final in Adelaide. The 26-year-old Keys was done with her compatriot after just over an hour: 6-1 6-2. The American, who dropped to place 87 in the world ranking, recorded her sixth tournament victory. The 2017 US Open finalist will start the Australian Open in the first round next week against her 11th-seeded compatriot Sofia Kenin, who won the first grand slam tournament of the year in 2020.
