The tennis players from Russia have won in Prague for the win in the Billie Jean King Cup, the renewed national tournament for women’s teams formerly known as the Fed Cup. The Russians defeated Switzerland 2-0 in the final of the final week.
Daria Kasatkina put Russia ahead in the final. The number 28 of the WTA ranking was too strong for Jil Teichmann in two sets, the number 39: 6-2 6-4.
Then it was up to Belinda Bencic, the highest-ranking player of the Swiss team, to tie the score. The number 17 of the world ranking started well against Lioedmila Samsanova, but lost the initiative in the second set. The Russian number 40 won the second set and immediately took a break in the third set. She never gave up that lead. At 5-4, she got two match points and struck straight away.
Samsanova thus gave the Russians the overall victory for the first time since 2008. It is the fifth time that the Russian tennis players win the country tournament. The Russians won its predecessor, the Fed Cup, in 2004, 2005, 2007 and 2008.
