Non-profit organizes workshop on Ukrainian art techniques

Experienced artists know that a brush and a piece of paper can be your passport to exploring the world.

Art workshops can also be guided tours to places you hear about but don’t visit.

The Ukrainian non-profit Groningen, in collaboration with Ukrainian art instructors, will hold a workshop next week on a unique decorative painting style called Petrykivka.

This workshop is a hands-on event that includes information on traditional Ukrainian painting techniques and their practice under the careful observation of experts. “In just 3 hours, create your own unique hand-painted work under the guidance of your instructor, Alesya,” says the workshop. read.

Petrykivka is a very old art form that once adorned the exterior walls of many houses in the Ukrainian village of the same name in the lush agricultural region of eastern Ukraine. Candy-colored art, mostly of flowers, was originally believed to ward off evil spirits and create a prosperous and happy home. About ten years ago, this technique was added to UNESCO’s list of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. The village of Petrykivka is a few hours’ drive from the front lines of the war.

The workshop costs a modest €40 and will be held on Sunday 30th October from noon to 3pm in the premises of the new Ukrainian Food Restaurant on Kerklaan 23.

“All ingredients, coffee/tea and snacks are included in the price,” the organizers say.

“All profits will go to help Ukraine and we will report on it,” they emphasize.
