the 5 best highlights of Lisbon

Call out old trams, picturesque streets and cozy terraces and you arrive at Lisbon. The Portuguese capital is a popular destination for both tourists and digital nomads, who travel here especially for the cozy atmosphere. But what are the best highlights for a lightning visit to Lisbon? Subway lists them for you.

Order a pastel de nata at a kiosk café

One of the nicest things about Lisbon are the kiosk terraces, which pop up in every neighborhood. The so-called ‘quiosques’ open around noon and you can enjoy a refreshing drink in the sun. You can often find them in a park, on a square or along the river. The kiosk is a real meeting place for locals and the atmosphere here is always great. Here you will also find many Portuguese delicacies for a small price, such as the well-known pastel de natas.

Alzulejo, also from Holland

Tiles, tiles and more tiles: the ‘alzulejo’ dominate the Portuguese street scene. A treasure of tiles can be admired in the former monastery of Madresfield Deus. From Dutch crafts to special specimens that are thousands of years old: the Museo Azulejo has them all in house. The extravagant church and courtyard garden in the monastery are also worth a visit. And a nice extra: it is free for you as a Dutch person.

Visit a Botanical Garden in Lisbon

Looking for peace and quiet in the bustle of the city? Visit Jardim Botânico in the hip Príncipe Real district. Here you can see the most beautiful plants for a small price (3 euros), which normally only grow in Japan, South America and New Zealand. A lovely place to stroll, peek at the impressive paintings by art students or read on a bench.

Tip: take a trip to Sintra

At 30 kilometers from Lisbon you will find the old town of Sintra, which seems to come straight out of a fairy tale book. Through a botanical garden you enter a hilly area, which takes you along one of the many palaces, castle and fortresses. I myself visited the famous Pena Palace: a brightly colored palace dating from the 19th century. It costs ten euros to enter, including a ticket for the extravagant interior of the old residents. The architecture is very special because of the amalgamation of various building styles and the view certainly does not disappoint.

Stroll through historic Alfama

Alfama is a characteristic neighborhood that you should not miss when visiting Lisbon. This historic place has many small squares and narrow streets, where the laundry hangs on the line and the houses differ in color. It is a bit touristy, but remains a good tip to stroll through, thanks to the good atmosphere and cozy cafes. Along the way you will also pass many beautiful viewpoints over the city, such as Miradouro das Portas Do Sol or Miradouro da Santa Luzia.
