EU Unveils ‘Game-Changer’ Data Center to Investigate Crime in Ukraine

On Thursday, the EU’s judicial cooperation agency announced a “game-changing” data center for collecting and analyzing evidence of crimes in Ukraine, which was invaded by Russia a year ago.

The Hague-based agency and Ukraine also backed the European Union’s announcement that it would coordinate investigations into crimes committed after the invasion.

“We expect the database to be fully operational by this summer,” said Ladislav Hamran, president of Eurojust.

“This database is a real game-changer in the prosecution of major international crimes,” he told journalists.

The Center collects, stores and analyzes evidence presented by prosecutors in EU member states and by prosecutors in other countries represented by the agency, including the UK and the US.

Digital evidence that can be submitted for safekeeping includes photographs, video recordings, satellite and drone images, and eyewitness testimony.

This will allow prosecutors to “shed light not only on individual crimes, but also on the systemic actions behind them,” which “leads to more and faster national investigations,” Hamran said. .

The data center will work with Eurojust’s new office to prosecute crimes in Ukraine.

The agency’s Kiev representative Miroslava Krasnovorova said more than 71,000 war crimes and more than 16,000 crimes against national security were being investigated in Ukraine.

There are growing calls for an independent tribunal to prosecute Russia for the crime of aggression.
