Kwak Summer Festival kicks off in Amsterdam

The Kwak Summer Festival in Amsterdam begins again. Over the next four weekends, Nelson Mandela Park in Amsterdam Zuidoost will be filled with music, food, drink and traditional football tournaments. This is the 46th time the festival has been held.

Visitors can enjoy delicacies such as pears, pommes and roses at dozens of stalls set up for the multicultural festival. But the program also includes debates, a pop-up museum, workshops for children and Bigi Suma Day, a gathering for seniors. Also scheduled are performances by Sister Sledge, Kenny B and Jung McCroy. There are also several themed days such as Pink Sunday, Molkan Day and Hindu Day.

The festival began in 1975 as a small football tournament, then called Kwakoe, to provide a summer of fun for the youth of Beirmamer who could not go on vacation. Since then, it has evolved into an event that includes debates, lectures, dance workshops, beauty contests, and music performances, in addition to football. Kwaku is also particular about atmosphere, food and drinks. Every summer, the festival takes place on his four consecutive weekends.

According to the i Amsterdam website, the Kwak Summer Festival is one of the largest festivals in the Netherlands and one of the largest events in Amsterdam, attracting around 300,000 visitors each year. Last year, the festival attracted more than 140,000 visitors.
