The Netherlands dropped in the World Press Freedom Index in 2021

The Netherlands ranks sixth in the world in a report that ranks press freedom in 180 countries around the world. This is a good performance, but slightly inferior to the 5th place ranking achieved in 2020.

2021 Press Freedom Index

The Press Freedom Index, which consists of the Journalists Association of Reporters Without Borders, surveys the freedom of the press in 180 countries around the world. The annual report ranks countries according to their freedom by surveying a large number of experts and analyzing data on abuse and violence against journalists.

Each country will be given an overall score of 100 based on performance on a set of seven criteria.

  • Plural
  • Media independence
  • Environment and self-censorship
  • Legislative framework
  • transparency
  • infrastructure
  • Abuse

The 2021 report ranks Norway No. 1 in the world for the fourth consecutive year with a score of 6,72. Finland is second (6,99), followed by Sweden (7,24). Turkmenistan (80,03), North Korea (81,28) and Eritrea (81,45) occupy the bottom.

Freedom of the press in the Netherlands

This year, the Netherlands dropped from 5th to 6th, with an overall score of 9,67 out of 100. This means that the country is still in the “good situation” category, but it is the worst performance in the Netherlands since the index started. In 2013, the country will mark for the second consecutive year when it fell into the rankings.

Overall, the Press Freedom Index states that Dutch journalists “were free to work and enjoyed the respect and legislative and institutional protection of many.” Dutch police have also consistently stepped up measures to protect journalists from attacks.

The 2021 report did little to improve the accessibility of state-held information by the Dutch government, and the fact that large amounts of intelligence data collection “repeatedly violated journalist privacy.” Is emphasized. In addition, as a result of the coronavirus pandemic, many right-wing Dutch politicians spoke in 2020, questioning the credibility and legitimacy of well-known media outlets such as NOS, and even physically attacking journalists. It increased last year.
