The impact of exercise on your mental health

A new experiment/study shows for the first time the role physical inactivity plays in your mental health. This research is called The Mind Race and is an ASICS experiment.

The investigation was led for Professor Brendon Stubbs. Stubbs is a leading researcher in the field of movement and the mind† He examined the mental health of avid exercisers who agreed to take a week off from their regular fitness routine.

Important to note: the participants in the study were all healthy and had no injuries, which forced them to take a break from their sports.

Less self-confidence

The results of the study are remarkable: both their cognitive and emotional well-being were measured by this break affected. For example, it turned out that the self-confidence of these active people decreased by 20 percent, and their positive mindset decreased by 16 percent.

It didn’t stop there, as energy levels also dropped by nearly a quarter (23 percent) and their ability to cope with stress plummeted by 22 percent.

Improvements when you move again

The participants were also monitored after that week. What seems? When the participants returned to their regular exercise program, they all experienced immediate improvements in their mood.

According to the researchers, you don’t have to exercise for hours to notice these positive effects. Based on the data in the study, it appears that just 15 minutes and 9 seconds is enough to significantly boost your mental state.

Positive mental effect

Professor Stubbs explains: “Thanks to new technology and the efforts of thousands of people, we have now been able to determine exactly how much physical exertion is required to produce a positive mental effect. This research helps to quantify and make more tangible the amount of physical activity needed to improve mental health.”
