Queen Elizabeth welcomes the Bidens on a podium, after which a guard of honor is formed by the Grenadier Guards First Battalion. Biden will then inspect the Guard of Honor along with Major James Taylor and Major General Christopher Ghika. This short military ceremony takes place in the courtyard of the palace, the so-called Quadrangle. The queen stays on stage with the first lady. Afterwards, the Bidens are received inside Windsor Castle for tea.
The US president’s visit was announced last week. Joe Biden is in Europe for the G7 summit in Cornwall’s Carbis Bay, among others, and is taking the opportunity to visit the Queen directly. It is Elizabeth’s first foreign visit since the death of her husband Prince Philip in April. The 95-year-old monarch has received few guests since the start of the corona crisis.
Elizabeth has seen the Bidens before this weekend at previous G7 summit meetings. There, the British queen showed that she has not lost any of her humor yet. She provided a smile at the official photo opportunity on Friday. “Should we look like we’re having a good time?” she commented as she posed. Joe Biden, Angela Merkel and Emmanuel Macron, among others, had a hearty laugh about it.
The other British royal family members have also met the Bidens. For example, Catherine, the wife of Prince William, visited a school in Cornwall on Friday with US First Lady Jill Biden. Biden has long worked as an English teacher and is a passionate advocate for the education sector in the US. It was the first time Catherine and Jill Biden had met. After the session in the school, Jill Biden went to the beach, where she took a walk with her husband and British Prime Minister Boris Johnson.
