A motion to force the royal family to pay taxes will not be implemented because it would require a constitutional change without the required majority, news agency ANP reported this week.

King Willem-Alexander, Queen Máxima, Princess Amalia and Princess Beatrix are currently exempt from taxes under Article 40 of the Constitution.Ah motion The bill, drafted by the political party Denk, called on the government to end the royal family’s tax-exempt status, but won majority support against the prime minister’s advice.

However, a two-thirds vote is required to amend the constitution. Of the 150 seats in the House of Representatives, only 90 were in favor of the bill, 10 short of a majority.

“There is no sufficient constitutional basis for this change,” Rutte said.

MPs have previously complained about a €276,000 increase in the king’s salary this year to €6.4 million. A majority of MPs said it would have been “a gesture of royal generosity” if he refused to rise, seeing that many people were struggling to pay their bills.
