Israel Adesanya gave an MMA fighting clinic last night in his rematch with Italian Marvin Vettori for the UFC middleweight title at the Gila Arena, Glendale, Arizona. It was the New Zealander’s third title defense and his second fight with Vettori.
UFC middleweight champion Adesanya is back on track after suffering his first career loss in a light heavyweight title fight earlier this year. Adesanya defeated Vettori via unanimous decision (50-45, 50-45, 50-45) in the UFC 263 headlining for his title. The event also marked the return of infamous fighter Nate Diaz, who lost to Briton Leon Edwards in five rounds (watch the fights back here).
Adesanya and Vettori spent over 25 minutes standing in the UFC Octagon at the initiative of the New Zealander, who showed he had more tools to parry takedowns than his challenger.
Vettori got a few takedowns but couldn’t do much with the dominant positions. Each time he was thrown to the ground, Adesanya quickly rose to his feet. The fight was in Adesanya’s favor in the fourth and fifth rounds, with Vettori struggling to hit the champion with punches and kicks.
Adesanya and Vettori first met in April 2018, before they were both top contenders in the division. Adesanya won the three-round match via split decision. Vettori, who was ranked No. 3 on his way to his first UFC title shot, saw his five-fight win streak come to an end. This was the Italian’s first loss since 2018.
