Ukraine has banned fertilizer exports because of the war with Russia. According to the Ukrainian government, fertilizer is needed for own use to ensure sufficient food. The country had previously banned the export of various agricultural products such as grain.
In a statement, the Ukrainian Ministry of Agriculture said it would also ban the export of fertilizer raw materials. President Volodimir Zelenski had said on Friday that the country should sow as many crops as possible this spring, despite the war. Farmers have said they will do so as soon as possible in safe areas.
Russia has also banned the export of fertilizers. Russia is the largest supplier of fertilizer to the European Union. Due to high gas prices, fertilizer prices have risen to record levels. The large Norwegian fertilizer group Yara has already had to cut production due to high gas prices.
