Ullrich takes a bike ride with Armstrong after a difficult period: ‘I was just as bad as Pantani’ | Cycling

At the turn of the century they were each other’s biggest enemies in the Tour de France, but today former riders Lance Armstrong (50) and Jan Ullrich (47) are two hands on one stomach. They went on a bike ride in Mallorca together and had their picture taken together. Ullrich seems to be on the mend after a rough patch. “I needed help and now I got it.”

Lance Armstrong and Jan Ullrich were together on the final podium of the Tour de France four times. In 2000, 2001 and 2003, Ullrich, Tour winner in 1997, was second behind his American competitor, in 2005 the German was third. Armstrong lost all his overall victories after a doping scandal, but Ullrich also had to give up his third place in 2005 for his involvement in the Fuentes case.

While Armstrong was banned from cycling in the wake of the doping woes, Ullrich went downhill. The German struggled with depression and addictions and was negatively in the news a few times. In 2018, for example, he assaulted a prostitute in a hotel room in Frankfurt and grabbed a restaurant employee by the throat at Hamburg airport a month later.

As bad as Pantani

But now Ullrich seems to have recovered. At a cycling camp in Mallorca – organized by ‘The Move’, Armstrong’s podcast – Ullrich took a ride with Armstrong and ex-runner, George Hincapie. “Impossible to describe what it means to me and millions of others to see this man back to health,” Armstrong captioned a photo with Ullrich. ,,I am so proud, champion. Know that I love you very much and that I will always be there for you.”

In addition to the bike ride, Ullrich was also a guest in the podcast, along with Hincapie, Armstrong and Johan Bruyneel. The German told his story about the past period. “Three years ago I had big problems,” he said. ,,And then Lance came to visit me, which made me very happy. I was as bad as Marco Pantani and almost dead. Now I am very happy.”

Ullrich’s new lifestyle is also physically visible – he looks sharp again. “I train every day,” he said. ,,I drink water and three years ago I gave up alcohol and drugs. I live healthy, my girlfriend also cooks very healthy for me. All this keeps me in good health and feeling good. I’m not alone – that’s very important. I needed help and now I got it.”
