UMCG is investigating the effects of delayed care due to the Covid pandemic

What effects of delayed care?

He also wants to know what the experiences were of patients who had to wait, but who did need treatment. ‘He received a subsidy of €800,000 from ZonMW’, according to the UMCG. Over the past 2 years, the COVID-19 pandemic has forced many hospitals to temporarily suspend parts of planned care. What exactly were the effects of this delayed care?

Scarce capacity due to Covid patients

In March 2020, intensive care units in the Netherlands were flooded with COVID-19 patients. Understandably, the focus was initially on this group of very ill patients. But as the corona crisis continued, more and more hospitals were forced to decide which care should be temporarily stopped.

Triage Models

Due to the triage models that hospitals applied to responsibly deal with scarcity of care, some patients were given priority over others. For example, doctors were often able to continue treating oncology patients without too much delay. Patients with, for example, joint wear and tear often remained on the waiting list for a long time for, for example, a hip prosthesis. What impact did these alternative treatment trajectories of hospitals have on the outcomes of care and how did patients and their care providers experience this period?

draw lessons

Schelto Kruijff wants to find out two things in this study: ‘On the one hand, we want to analyze what the consequences were for patients who had surgery or had an intervention while they were infected with the coronavirus. On the other hand, we evaluate to what extent the treatment of non-COVID-19 patients has changed during the corona crisis and what the influence was on the outcome of care and how patients experienced this period. For example, patients’ complaints can worsen because an intervention or treatment is not carried out or is delayed. Think, for example, of a patient with a growing thyroid tumor who is unable to swallow as a result, or a patient with joint wear who becomes bedridden due to postponing the operation.’
