In the coming years, the retirement age in the Netherlands will rise to 68 years. In order to allow people with demanding professions to retire earlier, an employer may pay a maximum of € 22,000 gross (a single person’s AOW) per year to employees to bridge the period until retirement. However, in the time between stopping work and actually reaching retirement age, pension accrual also stops. Pensions may even be lower because the benefits can start earlier.
In 2013, the cabinet wanted to encourage longer working hours and early retirement was subject to additional taxation. Through the 2019 pension agreement, there was an option for heavy professions to retire up to three years earlier. The scope for doing this without an RVU fine (Early Retirement Scheme) is, however, capped at € 22,000 and only for people born before 1962.

Erik Bouwens, general manager of Matrans: “We are not going to pay the RVU fine. It is now the turn of The Hague. ”
FNV Havens leader Niek Stam wants to conclude another fifteen similar collective labor agreements in the port in the coming months. “Then we will see in September or October whether the then sitting Minister of Social Affairs is doing anything with it.”
