They employ people with ‘one of the last really tough professions’. In order to allow people with demanding professions to retire earlier, an employer may pay a maximum of € 22,000 gross (a single person’s AOW) per year to employees to bridge the period until retirement. However, in the time between stopping work and actually reaching retirement age, pension accrual also stops. Pensions may even be lower because the benefits can start earlier.

In 2013, the cabinet wanted to encourage longer working hours and early retirement was subject to additional taxation. Through the 2019 pension agreement, there was an option for heavy professions to retire up to three years earlier. The scope for doing this without an RVU fine (Early Retirement Scheme) is, however, capped at € 22,000 and only for people born before 1962.

Generosity punished

Various employers in the port of Rotterdam are now willing to continue to pay an annual average of € 15,000 in pension contributions, also for people who were born in 1969 at the latest. However, this generosity is fiscally punished by the tax authorities, because it means the maximum regular taxed amount that employers pay for. may pay early retirement is exceeded. Anything above that € 22,000 will be subject to an additional levy of 52%.

In addition to the agreements in principle concluded with ILS and Matrans on Tuesday, the negotiation result that container terminal ECT reached with the unions in March also includes an agreement in which the company pledged to continue to pay pension contributions for employees who retire earlier.

However, the employers do want to see that the tax RVU ‘fine’ of 52% on their pension contribution will be removed from the table and say that the unions CNV and FNV Havens support their attempt to get the Minister of Social Affairs, now still Wouter Koolmees (D66), convincing that this is necessary for arduous professions. Erik Bouwens, general manager of Matrans: “We are not going to pay the RVU fine. It is now the turn of The Hague. ”

FNV Havens leader Niek Stam wants to conclude another fifteen similar collective labor agreements in the port in the coming months. “Then we will see in September or October whether the then sitting Minister of Social Affairs is doing anything with it.”

The lashers will receive a new collective labor agreement for 4 years, with a 12% wage increase corrected for inflation.

Social Affairs has announced that it will not deviate from the pension agreement signed by FNV. “If employers want to pay extra pension contributions, that’s fine, but that involves a levy.”
