How many unguarded level crossings are there?
In total there are almost 1800 level crossings in the Netherlands. Most are secured, for example with barriers. 277 transitions are not secured, there are often only warning signs. They are often on quiet roads, especially in rural areas.
Research by the Dutch Railways and ProRail now shows that at 137 of those unguarded level crossings the risk of an accident is much greater than previously thought. This is partly because heavy and slow traffic has to cross regularly, while trains that often run at the maximum speed at those locations (120 to 140 kilometers per hour). The intention is to remove these level crossings as soon as possible. And if that does not work immediately, come up with temporary measures.
