US to scrap tariff on Ukrainian steel for one year

The United States will remove tariffs on Ukrainian steel for one year. With this, Washington wants to help the economy of the country attacked by Russia. The 25 percent tax was imposed by Donald Trump in 2018. The previous US president imposed tariffs on steel from many countries.

The Ukrainian steel industry has also been hard hit by the war. Steel factories in Mariupol, for example, were bombed several times during the fierce battle for that city. Ukraine also has great difficulty in exporting products. The country has lost a number of important ports and others are barely usable because Russia dominates the Black Sea.

According to Ukrainian Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal, his country loses more than 160 million euros daily because it is cut off from the sea. As a result, the export capacity has more than halved, according to him. Some of the exports have been moved to road or rail. Ukraine has also signed a deal with Romania and Bulgaria to export some of the products such as grain through their ports.
