After more than a year of absence, Raymond van Barneveld made his comeback on television this afternoon, after putting his darts aside in December 2019 after his elimination at the World Cup. He earned back his Tour card through the Q-school, but immediate success at a major tournament failed to materialize. ‘Barney’ fought back to 3-3 after trailing 3-1 against Scottish Soutar, but then lost three legs in a row. The latter two in particular will frustrate him. In it, his average dropped to below eighty.
The five-time world champion showed a touch of his class at the start of the match, by throwing out 152. However, it did not lead to a victory.
It did turn out to be a beautiful afternoon for Lisa Ashton. She broke a record with an average of 100.3. Never before has a female darter pitched such a high average on a television tournament. With that she knocked Aaron Beeney out of the tournament: 2-6.
