A week later than his Dutch teammates, Mathieu van der Poel is also on his way to Tokyo. The all-rounder will come into action next Monday to make his Olympic dream come true: winning a gold medal on mountain bike.
“After I came back from the Tour de France I took a few days to recover”, Van der Poel said through his team. “After that I started training specifically on the mountain bike. It always takes some getting used to when making the switch. from racing bike to mountain bike and that was now also the case.”
,,It was nice to be able to train at home for two quiet weeks, without all the excitement of the Tour. I feel okay and curious about the track and the climate in Tokyo. I want to explore the course the two days before the race. The goal is still the same: to win a medal.”
The rest of the mountain bike squad has been in Japan since last Friday. On behalf of the Netherlands, in addition to Van der Poel, Milan Vader is also at the departure with the men. The women will ride on the same course on Tuesday. There Anne Tauber and Anne Terpstra represent the Netherlands. Many athletes have traveled to Tokyo well before they have to take action to get used to the conditions and the time difference.
Van der Poel left the Tour de France after eight stages to prepare for the Games. That decision did not go down well with everyone.
