Cyclocross world champion Van der Poel returned to the Netherlands on Tuesday after his team had to leave the Tour of the United Arab Emirates after the first stage because a member of the staff tested positive for the corona virus. Van der Poel had won the first stage of the cycling round.
He tested negative on Monday evening and was allowed to leave Abu Dhabi, which means that he now has the opportunity to start in the Omloop and thus can continue his preparation for the big spring classics. “It is up to his team Alpecin-Fenix, but of course Mathieu van der Poel is more than welcome. It is not without reason that he is the winner of our Tour of Flanders ”, says Van Den Spiegel.
Van der Poel will then have to comply with the corona protocol of the international cycling union UCI. “He will have to submit some negative tests to start on Saturday. That is all feasible, but necessary to obtain the right to start. ” Alpecin-Fenix has the option to adjust its selection up to 72 hours before the start of the Omloop.
