Wright and Lewis quarrelMichael van Gerwen has qualified for the eighth finals of the Players Championship Finals. De Brabander did this by winning 6-3 in the second round against compatriot Raymond van Barneveld.
The clash between the two Dutch darts greats can be called a real classic. The 32-year-old Van Gerwen and his compatriot 22 years older met each other for the last time in 2019. After that, Van Barneveld stopped as a darts player, but he also returned. This was the first match between the two former world champions since his comeback.
Van Barneveld started the match strongly: five of his first six darts ended up in the triple 20. Still, Van Gerwen kept the leg he started, after which the defending champion from Brabant immediately broke his opponent. ‘Barney’, however, came back nicely to 2-2.
It was only when it was 3-3 that things started to improve for Van Gerwen, who also started to cheer more fanatically. Van Barneveld remained stoic, but could no longer keep up with his compatriot’s high scores. Van Gerwen finished it off via double 20. In the eighth finals, the Dutchman, who won the tournament six times, will face Scottish Gary Anderson on Saturday evening.
The averages did not differ much in the end. Van Gerwen threw 95.62 per die. Van Barneveld, yesterday still good for a great average of 103.99, today came no further than a still acceptable 93.40. ‘MVG’ hit 60 percent of his doubles, his opponent from The Hague 42.86 percent.
Trouble Wright and Lewis
Peter Wright and Adrian Lewis got into a fight in the second lap. Shortly after Wright threw his winning dart into the board (6-5 win), the two got into a heated argument. Then both former world champions left the stage sulking. Wright did not want to tell the camera what the discussion was about afterwards.
Van der Voort also to eighth finals
Vincent van der Voort qualified for the eighth finals of the Players Championship Finals earlier in the day. The 45-year-old Dutchman defeated Englishman Andy Boulton in an exciting match 6-5.
Van der Voort started the second round energetically with two legs won, but Boulton broke Van der Voort back and tied the score. Because both darters kept their own legs after that, it was equal to Boulton’s 5-4 lead. The Dutch Destroyer, too strong for compatriot Jelle Klaasen in the previous round, but straightened up nicely and secured a place in the third round.
The Dutchman was already able to throw 129, but he failed to do so. Since Boulton wasn’t around, he could build for tops. The North Hollander did not fail and won for the second time in a row in England. Van der Voort is the first Dutchman to qualify for the third round in Minehead.
Danny Noppert will play in the second round against Dimitri van den Bergh at 5.30 pm.
