Venezuela calls up 15 new players for Copa América due to corona infection | Sport

The Venezuelan Football Federation has called up 15 new players to the Copa América after 12 members of the country’s football delegation tested positive for the corona virus on the eve of the opening game against host country Brazil. Among the infected members are eight players who immediately went into isolation.

Venezuela’s Portuguese coach José Peseiro says the players’ drop-out has disrupted his team’s preparation. ,,Tomorrow we will play with eleven players who have never trained or played together before.” Four people from the Bolivian delegation also tested positive. According to a statement from the Bolivian Football Association, three players and one member of the technical staff are involved.

Brazil’s Health Minister Marcelo Queiroga said the infected players will only be allowed to leave the country after a negative corona test. “There will be no coming and going of players. Players who test positive will remain in quarantine.”

The corona outbreak in the Venezuelan team is another blow to the Copa América that has been criticized from all sides for the health situation in Brazil, the new host country after the withdrawal of Argentina and Colombia. Brazil is the country worst hit by the pandemic after the United States.

Title holder Brazil opens the tournament on Sunday in Brasilia against Venezuela. The Copa América is played in five stadiums in four cities: Brasilia, Cuiabá, Goiânia and Rio de Janeiro, which has two stadiums. The 47th edition of the South American Championship, with ten participating countries, will be played without an audience in the stadiums. All teams have to stay in their own ‘bubble’.
