In her last judo tournament, Marhinde Verkerk made it through to the battle for a bronze medal at the World Championships in Budapest. The 2009 world champion, who will end her judo career after this tournament, now has to beat compatriot Guusje Steenhuis to lose a podium place in the class up to 78 kilograms.
The 35-year-old Verkerk lost in the quarterfinals on waza-ari to the German Anna Maria Wagner, but recovered in the second chance round. In it, she defeated Luise Malzahn.
Guusje Steenhuis, who received the coveted Olympic starting permit for Tokyo instead of Verkerk, reached the last four in the same weight class. Steenhuis successively defeated Kaouthar Ouallal, Patricija Brolih and Inbar Lanir on ippon, but had to bow to Madeleine Malonga in the semifinals.
