Schermer Bas Verwijsen has reached the third round at the Olympic Games. The 37-year-old sword specialist was too strong for South Korean Kweon Young-jun with 15-10.
Verwijsen, who, like Kweon, had been exempted from the first round, made the difference in the end of the match. In the third period he trailed 9-10, but with six points in a row, the Brabander then quickly ran out to 15-10, also because Kweon was increasingly desperate for goals.
Verlagen comes into action at 7.35 am in the third round. With a win, he equals his best Olympic performance, reaching the quarter-finals in 2008. Verlagen will participate in the Games for the fourth time.
