Verstappen: ‘Championship battle is closer than the score suggests’ | formula 1

Max Verstappen is of course satisfied with the start of the Formula 1 season and the lead in the World Cup standings after nine races, but does not see it as a reason to sit back.

“We have started well and of course I am very happy with that, but we have to keep pushing, we can’t just think about our results so far,” he says on the Red Bull website. “It’s going to be really exciting and a challenge for the rest of the year, but that’s what makes it exciting.”

He continues: ,,We were definitely ahead in Austria and our car was very good there, but in France we only won with a few laps to go, so the championship is very close and maybe even closer than the points at the moment. show. There are some difficult circuits coming up where Mercedes might be ahead of us, but we are doing everything we can to stay ahead of them.”

Verstappen is looking forward to the British Grand Prix, next Sunday at Silverstone, with probably packed stands. β€œThe return of the fans makes all the difference at Silverstone. Last year we did two races without an audience and then the atmosphere was lacking. It’s still a great track, of course. I just hope that the race will also be exciting for the public.”

Verstappen is fairly positive about the introduction this season of three sprint races on Saturday, in which the winner can take pole position on Sunday. ,,I’m totally open to trying the sprint races and I like that we have a little less training before we start qualifying, but let’s just wait and see. It’s hard to say anything about it until we test it this weekend. Every race you take controlled risks, especially if you are fighting for a championship, but this one race will not determine the end result.”
