VideoVirgil van Dijk has scored his first goal for Liverpool since September 12, 2020. The Dutch defender scored 4-0 against his former club Southampton in the 52nd minute after a corner kick from Trent Alexander-Arnold.
It also remained at 4-0, bringing Liverpool closer to one point in the Premier League leader Chelsea. However, Chelsea have played one game less.
At Anfield it was already after two minutes via Diogo Jota. The Portuguese also made the 2-0 after 32 minutes on a pass from Mohamed Salah. Thiago already decided the game against Southampton in the 37th minute: 3-0. Seven minutes after the break, Van Dijk was accurate. It was his first Premier League goal after his long-term injury.
With the third win in eight days, Liverpool is working on a good run after the international break. After victories over Arsenal (4-0) and FC Porto (2-0) Jürgen Klopp’s team was clearly too strong for Southampton this time.
Arsenal beat Newcastle
Also visiting Arsenal, Newcastle United failed to leave last place in the Premier League. The club, taken over by a Saudi Arabian consortium, went down 2-0 on a visit to London.
Attacking the top is Newcastle’s extreme ambition, but after thirteen rounds in the Premier League, the club must mainly fear relegation. Newcastle, where Eddie Howe made his official debut on the coaching seat, is still waiting for the first win after three months. Newcastle United have only collected six points, five less than the safe number seventeen Leeds United.
It also went wrong against Arsenal. After a nice attack, Bukayo Saka opened the score in the 56th minute. He finished devastatingly in the long corner. Ten minutes later it was substitute Gabriel Martinelli who beautifully doubled his team’s lead. The Brazilian attacker controlled a high ball behind the Newcastle goalkeeper.
Arsenal recovered from last week’s disappointing 4-0 defeat at Liverpool. The Gunners successfully defended sixth place in the Premier League.

Assist El Ghazi
Anwar El Ghazi was important as a substitute for Aston Villa. On a visit to Crystal Palace, the winger came on after 77 minutes and less than ten minutes later he provided the 0-2 assist to John McGinn. Matt Targett had already put the visitors ahead in the fifteenth minute. Marc Guehi made it exciting in injury time, but the three points went to Aston Villa: 1-2.
It was El Ghazi’s first assist in the Premier League since December 2019.
