Volvo plug-in hybrids go further thanks to larger batteries

Volvo’s 90- and 60-series plug-in hybrids are now moving forward thanks to larger batteries. Volvo has significantly increased the batteries, which significantly increases the electric range. From now on, there is a fully electric range of an estimated 70 to 90 kilometers (depending on model) on a single charge.

Average commuting distance

Since the average commute is between 30 km and 70 km (depending on region), most Volvo drivers with a home charging point will be able to make their daily car journey fully electric in a new Volvo plug-in hybrid. The new powertrain will be introduced on all Volvo Recharge plug-in hybrid models based on the Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), which includes the Volvo S60, V60, XC60, S90, V90 and XC90 Recharge models.

New long-range battery

Major improvements include a new long-range battery with a third layer of cells to increase capacity from 11.6 kWh to 18.8 kWh and a more powerful electric motor on the rear axle that now delivers 107 kW / 145 hp. The additional electric power results in a total combined output of 257 kW / 350 hp for the Recharge T6 and 335 kW / 455 hp for the Recharge T8 models, making the latter the most powerful Volvos ever produced.

One-pedal driving

In addition to the new powertrain, one-pedal drive will also be standard for the Volvo XC60, S90 and V90 Recharge plug-in hybrids. We already know this technique from the fully electric C40 and XC40 Recharge Pure electric models.

Lower CO2 emissions = less BPM

The increased battery capacity means that more customers will be able to drive mainly all-electric. Volvo Cars estimates that the new powertrain has the potential to reduce CO2 emissions in the WLTP driving cycle by about 50 percent.

More improvements

In addition to the powertrain improvements, the turbocharged T8 petrol engine has also been upgraded for greater fuel efficiency and performance. This means higher engine power at low revs and when pulling away, while ensuring a more refined electrified drive with lower CO2 emissions through the exhaust. For some variants, the CO2 emissions even drop to below 20 grams, making the XC60 and XC90 now also eligible for a halving of the road tax.

“It’s 2021 and people should no longer rely on petrol or diesel for their commute,” said Henrik Green, Chief Technology Officer at Volvo Cars. “Our latest plug-in hybrids provide all the electric range needed in most people’s everyday lives.”

The new and improved electric motor increases power to the rear wheels by 65 percent, improving performance and handling in all scenarios. Together with the improved battery, the redesigned electric motor also improves all-wheel drive, which can be particularly useful at low speeds, when pulling loads or when driving on slippery roads where extra traction and stability are required.

Fully electric in 2030

Volvo Cars is determined to become a leader in the fast-growing premium electric car market. By the middle of this decade, Volvo plans to sell 1.2 million cars worldwide, at least half of which will be fully electric. Volvo Cars aims to be a fully electric car manufacturer by 2030. “Driving with a plug-in hybrid is often a stepping stone to fully electric driving,” says Henrik Green. “We believe this upgrade will show many that electric driving is the future, bringing us closer to our 2030 ambition to become a fully electric brand.”

Research from Volvo

Customer research shows that Volvo Cars’ plug-in hybrids are now running in fully electric mode about half the time. This powertrain upgrade will increase that percentage, further cementing their position as ‘part-time electric cars’.
