Premier League DartsMichael van Gerwen lost the lead in the Premier League on Thursday evening. The five-time winner suffered a defeat (3-7) against substitute James Wade in the fourth round.
Van Gerwen got off to a good start earlier this week. After the draw against Dimitri van den Bergh, he consecutively beat Peter Wright and Rob Cross. Especially against Cross he made a big impression with an average of 107.58. The game of the three-time world champion is in this period without real successes and with his new arrows, however, still too changeable, as it turned out against Wade once again.
In the person of Wade, he already found a formidable opponent in Milton Keynes. In the last two editions of the Premier League, Van Gerwen had already failed to complete the The Machine even though the Brabander won the last five mutual encounters outside this competition.
Van Gerwen had a difficult evening in an empty Marshall Arena. He was not sharp enough on the doubles and missed many opportunities. In this way he only cashed in on one of his first eight possibilities. Wade also punished those misses extra hard and quickly took a comfortable 4-1 lead. After that, the finish at Van Gerwen with 110 and 94 went a little better, but Wade kept a margin of at least two legs (5-3) and, after new misses by Van Gerwen, even ran relatively easily to the 7-3 victory.
For Wade it was the first victory in this corona edition. The 38-year-old Briton was added to the field of ten darters at the last minute. World champion Gerwyn Price tested positive for Covid-19 just before the start of the competition and was forced to return home.
Due to the defeat of Van Gerwen, Dimitri van den Bergh is the new leader after four rounds. The Belgian surprise shared the points with Peter Wright, but now only has the lead with six out of four. Jonny Clayton also suffered his first defeat in the Premier League. The Welsh darter had particular problems to finish the legs (3 out of 16 on his doubles) and had to acknowledge his superior in Rob Cross: 3-7. With the same score, Van Gerwen managed to beat Cross the day before.
Just like Wednesday evening, another nine-darter was thrown in an empty Marshall Arena. After Clayton’s earlier perfect lay, this time it was José de Sousa’s turn. Despite the highlight, the Portuguese failed to win his match with Nathan Aspinall: 6-6 draw.
The first block of the Premier League will be closed with the fifth round on Friday. Van Gerwen then meets Nathan Aspinall in the third party of the evening. After that, the darters have a good week of rest and return to Milton Keynes on Monday, April 19, for the second session with four match days in a row.
