Lorena Wiebes has also won the second edition of the Scheldeprijs for women. The DSM cyclist was supreme in the bunch sprint after a 138 kilometer race with start and finish in Schoten, near Antwerp.
After 40 kilometers of race Megan Armitage, Simone Boilard and Haley Smith broke away from the pack. They took a maximum of two minutes, but five kilometers before the finish, Smith was caught last. Moments later there was a huge crash and 40 riders remained in front.
Wiebes’ team had been working all day, but in the final kilometre, DSM had lost control. That didn’t bother Wiebes. She found teammate Charlotte Kool’s wheel, lost it, found it again, turned it on and rode everyone a bike length.
“I was able to get over it and get the win,” said Wiebes. “As a team, we controlled the game from start to finish.”
