“Being in the audience at a metal concert as a black woman is something else,” Willow told V Magazine in a double interview with singer Alexis Brown of the metal band Straight Line Stitch.
During her high school years, she was even bullied for being a fan of rock bands like Paramore and My Chemical Romance. “It is often said: hey, you’re black. You shouldn’t be listening to this music,” Brown also recognizes.
In April, Willow released her new single Transparent Soul with Travis Barker, the drummer of the punk band Blink-182. With her new music she hopes to give more representation of black women in the rock world. “I hope black girls who listen to my music know that they are not alone. You’re not the only black woman who wants to wear her hair on one side and put on black eyeliner.”
