Around 4.30 pm there was 623 km of traffic jam on the Dutch roads. That has not happened since the start of the corona pandemic. “In the pre-corona era, this was a normal striker, but since corona this is a new record,” says Dennis Mooij of the ANWB.
The traffic on the highways is caused by commuters, recreational traffic and because the A50 at Apeldoorn was closed for a large part of the day. An airplane made an emergency landing there. That alone resulted in tens of kilometers of traffic jams.
Now that the coronavirus is on its way back, Mooij sees recreational traffic increasing again. “We’re doing some more.” That is why it is often busier on Friday afternoons than on other days. In the morning it is often still quiet on the road. “The morning rush is nothing.”
The ANWB expects most traffic jams to be resolved before 7 p.m. At 5:45 p.m. there was still almost 500 kilometers of traffic jams.
