Chinese table tennis player Fan Zhendong has become world champion for the first time in his career. The number 1 in the world was in Houston in the final with clear figures too strong for the Swede Truls Möregardh: 11-6 11-9 11-7 11-8.
Zhendong has long been the number 1 in the world, but at the 2017 World Cup and last summer at the Tokyo Olympics, he lost in the final to table tennis legend Ma Long. The 33-year-old Long was not there in the United States. He was the best in the last three World Cups.
China is in a league of its own in global table tennis. Austrian Werner Schlager was the last table tennis player from outside China to take the global title in 2003.
The only 19-year-old Möregardh is the global number 77. He surprised the German Timo Boll in the last four.
