Dutch power grid company Tenet has warned the Netherlands is facing an imminent power shortage, saying blackouts after 2030 could exceed official limits.

Outages due to power shortages are extremely rare at this time, but that is set to change. Tenet saidThe current maximum is 4 hours per year, but starting in 2030, power shortages could result in 4.5 hours of power loss per year, with a worst-case scenario of up to 12 hours.

There are two reasons for the impending crisis, Tennet said. On the one hand, demand for electricity is increasing as people switch away from fossil fuels. At the same time, less power is being generated from sources such as coal and gas that can quickly meet increasing demand.

Additionally, with coal, gas and nuclear power plants shut down across Europe, the Netherlands will be less likely to receive help from its neighbors in the event of trouble, Tenet said.

“It is therefore important to take action to ensure the market is flexible on both the demand and supply sides,” Tenet said.
