Sustainable Maritime Transport Forum – Gothenburg, 31 August | News item

On August 31st, the Embassy of the Netherlands in Sweden is organizing a Sustainable Maritime Transport Forum at the festival Frihamnsdagarna that will bring together a wide variety of actors in the maritime sector.

The shipping industry faces a major transition to net-zero emissions — yet fossil fuels are still the cheaper option. Is there a viable business case for sustainable maritime transport? And what effect will the new EU climate legislation have on the sector?

These and other questions will be tackled by several speakers in multiple free to attend seminars. Among the participants, there will be shipowners, cargo owners, regulatory authorities as well as representatives from the Royal Netherlands Shipping Association and the Port of Rotterdam. Dan Sten Olsson, CEO of Stena AB, will highlight major challenges and opportunities of the green transition.

Gothenburg’s 400th anniversary will also be touched upon. The Ambassador of the Netherlands, Bengt van Loosdrecht, will open the program, and historian Håkan Strömberg will give a presentation on maritime relations between Sweden and the Netherlands in the 17th century.
