Dutch pig farms, dairies and poultry farms are getting bigger
There are fewer livestock businesses in the Netherlands than they were a decade ago, but new statistics from the National Bureau of Statistics CBS show that the number of animals on each farm has risen sharply as the sector consolidates.
In total, chicken farms have 98 million chickens this year, down 2 million from a year ago. However, the number of farms he has decreased by 20% over the past decade. There are currently 1,711 poultry farms operating.
The number of pig farms has decreased by 45% over the last decade, but the total number of pigs has decreased by only 1.6%, from about 12 million to 11.3 million. The decline is due to government plans to help farmers cut ammonia and other emissions.
At the same time, the number of beef, calf and dairy cows on Dutch farms has stabilized at around 3.5 million, but the average farm now has 110 dairy cows, compared to 83 in 2012.
The number of goats per goat farm has also increased by almost 50% to 735, but the number of goat farms has also increased. The total has increased from 223 to 330 in ten years.
