Dutch PM hints at ‘intention’ to send Patriots to Ukraine

Dutch Prime Minister Mark Rutte announced his “intentions” in a meeting with President Joe Biden on Tuesday following Germany’s handover of US-made Patriot air defense missiles to Ukraine.

“I’m going to be in the Patriot project that you’re doing with Germany, the air defense system. I think it’s important and we’re in it,” Rutte told Biden at the White House, speaking with German Chancellor Olaf Scholz. “We talked this morning,” he added.

Germany announced on January 5 that it would follow the US in sending one of its advanced missile defense batteries to Ukraine.

Citing “horrifying footage” of apartments destroyed by powerful Russian missiles in the city of Dnipro on Saturday, Rutte said: “These are terrifying pictures and I think they further strengthen our resolve to stay in Ukraine.” said.

Biden praised the Netherlands’ contribution to the US-led Western alliance in helping Ukraine against Russian aggression, saying “Russia continues to act in ways that are almost unbelievable.”

According to the White House, Biden also spoke with Scholz by phone on Tuesday, only saying that he “discussed his firm support for Ukraine and condemned Russia’s aggression.”

“We also discussed our continued support for Ukraine,” the White House said in a statement.
