Greek Spool win double match against Dutch in Melbourne to set up plum tie
Taron Greekspool advanced to the third round of the Australian Open with a comfortable win over compatriot Botic van de Zandschulpe.
The 26-year-old defeated the 32nd seed in straight sets in the first Dutch clash in a Grand Slam tournament since 2001.
The two players on Court 17 were indistinguishable by their yellow T-shirts, white baseball caps and blue shoes, but the world’s No. 63 Greek pool won its first ATP Tour title in India 11 days ago. After the acquisition, he was clearly a good player.
He defeated van de Zandschulpe in the fifth game of the first set and the first game of the second set. The 27-year-old van Desandschulp missed a breakback opportunity in the eighth game and was down for two sets and showed no signs of recovery.
The Greekspool had to wait until the seventh game of the third set for a decisive break and scored an ace on the first match point to win 6-4 6-4 6-4.
His Round 3 opponent is Greece’s third-seeded Stefanos Tsitsipas, the second highest-ranked player left in the tournament after Rafael Nadal’s first-half loss on Wednesday.
