Groningen plans major housing expansion at Zernike campus – Northern Times

The City of Groningen, in cooperation with the Hanse University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen, reached an agreement Work with the Student Housing Foundation (SSH) to build 400 additional housing units for international students on the Zernike campus. SSH will develop and manage new student apartments. The agreement is seen as a temporary measure aimed at increasing the supply of housing for international students for the next decade or so.

The project is also expected to help reduce the peak demand for student accommodation that typically occurs before the start of the academic year.

“We want to offer a solution that meets the annual peak demand,” said the alderman of Housing Rik van Niejenhuis. The agreement stipulates that SSH will be able to rent a “double room” during his peak demand period from September onwards in a particular year. The municipality hopes the additional proposals will significantly solve the annual spike in student housing demand.

The new units will be ready by August next year and will be ready for new tenants on September 1, 2023. These new student apartments will be affordable modular units that can be used as long-term living spaces. Developers are also expected to create a comfortable living environment for residents. The new accommodation location is near Zernike Park and De Koegangen.

Local authorities say they chose temporary housing because it can be built quickly and solves the problem of affordable housing supply. City officials say they plan to build additional permanent housing on the Zernike campus from 2025 for a wide target group of international students, Dutch students, employees of educational institutions and possibly expats. .
