Increased job opportunities in the north
Job opportunities in Groningen and the north are increasing. Half of the student population at the University of Groningen and the Hanse University of Applied Sciences also want to stay in Groningen after graduation. This is good news. However, there is still work to be done to inform students that Groningen has many careers.
One North Holland organization working to bring these work into visibility is the LIFE Cooperative.
In order to facilitate the growth of the LIFE cooperative and its members, various actors work closely together on the subject of human capital: training and retaining high quality and sufficient talent. On this subject, we work closely with knowledge institutions such as the University of Groningen, UMCG, the Hanse University of Applied Sciences Groningen, Noorderpoort and the University of Drenthe. In this way, training courses can be developed optimally for the development of the labor market.
“In the meantime, LIFE Cooperative has become the ‘powerhouse of life science jobs’ in North Holland, offering job seekers opportunities to build a lifelong career. Life Cooperative Board Member and Leader Peter Ketterer said: “Northern Holland really is ‘the place to be’ and we want to make it more visible.”

Career prospects at Groningen are often unknown to students
After two years of study, the number of students from outside the North Holland region studying at the University of Groningen (RUG) and the Hanse University of Applied Sciences Groningen is about the same as the percentage of students leaving the region after studying abroad. the study. For his 70% of these students, this is due to career opportunities elsewhere. Better information about career opportunities in Groningen will help retain most of the valuable Groningen-trained talent for the region.
This is the conclusion of a joint study carried out by the Hanse University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen.it was commissioned by Groningen Agreement, University of Groningen, Hanse University of Applied Sciences Groningen, University Medical Center Groningen, Martini Hospital, State of Groningen, Norderpoort, Alpha University, City of Groningen, they wanted to know about the departure action. rice field. What is the number of students after learning and what are the motivations involved in this?
More UG students are leaving
Researchers have found that more than half of RUG’s students come from outside the northern Netherlands. After two years of study, about half of the students also left the north. Six years after the survey, his turnover rate increased to just under 60%.
About a quarter of Hanze University of Applied Sciences students come from outside the region. 28% of Hanse’s students left the North after his two years of studies, and 35% left the North after six years. The majority of Hanse students stay in their area. In both institutions, inflows from outside the region and outflows from the north cancel each other out.
Jouke van Dijk, Professor of Regional Labor Markets, said: What many people don’t know is that half of RUG’s students are also from outside the North. Not all graduates work here, so it’s not bad for some of them to leave. That they studied here is good for Groningen’s local economy because of its spending and ambassadorial role. The fact that graduates are leaving can be viewed as a great export, but it would of course be even better if Northern businesses themselves could tap into this important source of knowledge and innovation produced in the region. “
Higher Employment Opportunities Elsewhere
Work is the primary reason for leaving for 69% of students surveyed. Students surveyed also appear to rate the job prospects and career opportunities at Randstad more highly than at Groningen. This is especially true for most UG students. Student Health and Care is an exception. Another important reason for leaving is for partners (40%). In 26% of departures, ‘living environment’ plays an important role. This may have something to do with the Randstad dynamics. Hanse University of Applied Sciences students are more optimistic about finding suitable jobs in the Groningen area than those at the University of Groningen.
many stay north
Half of the students surveyed want to stay in Groningen after their studies. Friends are the most important reason for staying in Groningen (44%), but work is surprisingly important too (40%).
Interest in staying if there is work is strongest among students within the engineering and science domains. A small percentage (5%) of the students who left believe they will return north within 10 years. The main reasons are family, partner and living environment.
Prof. Karel Jan Alsem: “It seems that quite a few students want to stay in the region, but are unable to do so because they see no career prospects.” Jouke van Dijk: This is amazing because we have a lot of jobs, highly educated people are also employed, and with all the developments surrounding the energy transition, healthcare, etc., we also need smarter students.”
bundled research
Based on CBS microdata, the Spatial Sciences Department of the University of Groningen investigated how many students study at the Hanse University of Applied Sciences and the University of Groningen, where they come from and where they go.
A marketing research group at the University of Hanse investigated the motivations of students to leave or leave a job. In spring 2021, about 800 her third and her fourth year students at the Universities Groningen and Hanse completed a questionnaire.

make in the north
To make jobs in the north more visible to foreigners and show companies in the north how many foreign job seekers with high skills and experience are looking for jobs here , many organizations were brought together. make in the northThe project will bring international and northern Dutch companies into contact with each other through an English recruitment platform, workshops and networking events in English.
The project is supported by northern educational institutions (University of Groningen, Hanse University of Applied Sciences, NHL Stenden), governments (municipalities of Groningen, Leeuwarden, Emmen and Assen, WerkInZicht) and business associations (Royal Metal Union, VNO-NCW).
