Louis van Gaal reveals World Cup squad, seven Ajax players

PSV midfielder Xavi Simons and defender Jeremy Frimpong (Bayer Leverkusen) have been called up to the Netherlands squad for the 2022 Football World Cup in Qatar. However, keeper Jasper Cillessen, who moved from Valencia to NEC last summer and increased his playing time, is out of the group.

Director Louis van Gaal revealed his choices in a bombastic social media post on Friday, reading each player’s name out of the book while dramatic music played.

A strong 26-man squad, with 7 playing for Ajax, 3 for PSV, 1 for Feyenoord and 1 for Heerenveen. All the rest play abroad.

At a press conference, Van Gaal said he had tears in his eyes when he called 11 players on Friday morning to tell them they were not shortlisted.

He said Cillessen was ruled out because he wasn’t feeling well. However, Memphis Depay, who is currently out due to injury, has been included in the squad because he is important to the group “as a footballer and as a person,” Van Gaal said.

Zeist

The 26 players will meet in Zeist for the first training session on Monday before heading to Doha on Tuesday. Oranje’s first match will be against Senegal on 21 November.

Teams from the Netherlands are in Group A alongside hosts Ecuador and Senegal, with the top two teams from each group advancing to the Round of 16.

The Netherlands finished third at the World Cup in Brazil eight years ago, and were second in 1974, 1978 and 2010.
