The city wall continued to collapse after it partially collapsed. When dilapidation began to threaten nearby Londir, the city had to commission an archaeological survey before beginning restoration.
“This wall tells a special part of Maastricht’s history since the time of the fortress,” Bastianz told local radio station. The city had to carefully decide how to restore the walls and protect its history.
Preparatory work will begin in June. First, the city will excavate as much ground behind the wall as archaeological research will allow, then begin rebuilding. The city aims to start construction in early 2024.
