New honorary consul appointed to strengthen ties between Sweden and northern Netherlands – Northern Times
Groningen entrepreneur and educator Heleen van Beiren Named Honorary Consul of Sweden in Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe.
Van Baren was appointed by the Swedish Ministry of Foreign Affairs and supported by the Dutch government. The consulate, based in Groningen, expands the network of Swedish honorary consulates in the country and covers the three northern provinces. As honorary consul, Mr. van Baren will promote economic and cultural exchanges between Sweden and the northern Netherlands and help the Swedish people in times of emergency.

Van Balen is Director of Commutatio Group BV, a local company that works on job market inclusion, consulting, education and other projects. She serves on the board of many companies and organizations. Juan She Baren has also served as vice-president of the Groningen Commercial Club, Rotary and the Groningen Entrepreneurship Award, and she has extensive business networks in the region.
Van Balen holds a degree from the University of Groningen, specializing in Governance and Strategy Management, Risk Management and Leadership. She is also a faculty member at the Hanse University of Applied Sciences.
The appointment ceremony took place on 24 May 2023 at the grounds of the International Welcome Center North in Groningen.
