Four major Dutch health insurance companies have increased premiums from €3.75 to €9.30, bringing the average monthly payment for basic insurance from €138 to €142 per month.
VGZ, Menzis, Zilveren Kruis and CZ all announced their new rates on Saturday, the deadline for insurers to publish rates for 2023.
Insurers say premium increases are necessary to deal with rising wages and costs, as well as the impact of an aging population.
In its 2023 budget announcement in September, the government said the tariff would rise by about 10 euros per month.
VGZ spokesman Frank Elian said, “We understand it’s a steep increase at a time when everything is getting more expensive. But it’s inevitable.”
Policyholders have until the end of December to decide whether to switch to a new provider.
Income-dependent medical benefits increase by about 35 euros per month to 154 euros. This year’s top will be paid to a single person with a monthly income of up to €22,000, although the government has yet to announce his 2023 base amount.
The government decides on the composition of the basic policy and its own risk taking, which is currently €385. Insurers are free to set their own prices and determine the cost and composition of additional policies that cover items such as dental services and additional physical therapy.
Health insurance company DSW has previously announced that it will raise the basic premium next year by €9.75, bringing the monthly payment to €137.50.
