Number of private jet arrests rises to 413 after climate change protests
Border police now say they have arrested 413 climate change activists who climbed the fence at Schiphol Airport earlier this month and were chained to private jets.
Police had initially announced 200 arrests, but the actual figure was more than double as some cases were only officially registered later, a spokesman said. Broadcaster NOSAll those arrested have since been released from custody.
Greenpeace and Extinction Rebellion protesters targeted parts of the airport where private jets take off and land. Some of the campaigners were sitting under jets, while others were chained to planes outside the VIP terminal.
The environmental group Greenpeace said at the time, “We want fewer flights, more trains, and a ban on unnecessary short-haul flights and private jets.”
Once the police investigation is complete, the files are passed to the Prosecutor’s Office to determine whether any of the arrested should be taken to court or fined.
A spokesman said the paperwork was “substantial” given the high number of arrests. “We are trying to destroy the fence and possibly some jets,” he told his NOS.
