Qhit’s Schiphol Appoints New Chief Executive Officer

Amsterdam’s Schiphol Airport, one of Europe’s biggest aviation hubs, has appointed a new interim chief executive after months of turmoil.

Dick Benshop stepped down as chief executive last month after Schiphol forced airlines to cut flights and offered compensation to passengers who missed their flights.

The airport, Europe’s third largest in 2019, said: “From November 1st Ruud Sondag will become the new CEO of the Royal Schiphol Group.

“The Supervisory Board has appointed him on a provisional basis until August 31, 2023,” the statement said.

Sondag is a veteran senior manager and formerly chief executive of Dutch energy company Eneco, the airport added.

He is also a member of the supervisory board of the Dutch railway company ProRail and the port of Rotterdam.

But Sondag faces serious challenges in solving the current problems in Schiphol.

The Covid-19 pandemic has resulted in thousands of layoffs and severe staff shortages, especially in security screening of departing passengers.

Late last month, the beleaguered airport announced it would restrict flights until at least March next year.

“Schiphol is a beautiful company facing major challenges at the moment,” Sondag said in a statement.

“I am very motivated with all our employees and stakeholders to get Schiphol on track,” he said.
