Support for Monarchies Falls Again, 1 in 4 Supports Republicans
Support for the Dutch monarchy has not recovered since its plunge during the coronavirus pandemic, according to an annual survey conducted by Ipsos on behalf of the general public. Broadcaster NOS.
Ten years ago, when Willem-Alexander became king, the monarchy had the support of 80% of the Dutch. But now only 55% of the Dutch trust the monarchy, and the king himself 46%.
At the same time, 24% of those surveyed said the Netherlands should become a republic, up 9% from 2020.
The king’s popularity took a sharp hit after a string of gaffes during the pandemic, especially after his decision to vacation in Greece during the crisis.
Having been forced to cancel her plans to move in with friends as a student under threats, Princess Amalia can be expected to have a lot of sympathy for the position she finds herself in. She also said that her 75% of those surveyed would understand even if she decided otherwise. She becomes queen because of her threats against her.
