Today, the Embassy of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in Jordan celebrates the National Day and congratulates His Majesty King Willem-Alexander on his 56th birthday.th birthday. The King’s birthday celebration is commonly known as King’s Day.
“For the Embassy in Amman, King’s Day is an opportunity to reflect on the strong ties that bind the Netherlands and Jordan together. This year we celebrate the 72nd anniversary of strong diplomatic relations between the two kingdoms. Our relationship over the years has been marked by successful cooperation and coordination in many areas, as well as a longstanding friendship between the two royal families.We have been friends and allies for decades,” said Jordan. Harry Verweij, Ambassador to the Kingdom of the Netherlands said.
Since 2019, the Netherlands has invested over 200 million euros to help Jordan assist vulnerable people and host refugees. The two countries have expanded cooperation in many areas, especially water management in agriculture, education, private sector development, human rights, trade and security. Just last week, Jordan provided logistical support and facilities to the Dutch Armed Forces in the process of evacuating Dutch nationals from Sudan.
“2023 is an exciting year for us as we begin implementing a new multi-year strategy for development cooperation programs in Jordan. Our other areas of focus are water and climate, sustainable and inclusive economic growth and human rights,” added Ambassador Felway. “We will continue to encourage exchanges between Jordanian and Dutch knowledge institutions, and the exchange of Dutch know-how and innovations with local partners, while helping the most vulnerable people such as refugees, host communities, women and young people. The Netherlands will improve access to Jordanian host communities and refugees to education, social protection and decent work.
Additionally, Holland looks forward to officially launching the Orange Corners program in the coming months with partners such as iPark and The Queen Rania Center for Entrepreneurship. On the topic of water and climate, the Netherlands continues to combine Dutch know-how and best practices to help Jordan tackle its water challenges, especially through a rainwater harvesting project with the Islamic Network on Water Resources Development and Management. (INWRDAM) and Dutch partners Acacia Water and IHE Delft. Additionally, the Netherlands has committed her €30 million grant to the Amman-Aqaba water desalination and transportation project.
On the topic of trade cooperation between the two countries, Velwey said the Netherlands is working to strengthen bilateral trade. Last year, the Netherlands was one of Jordan’s strongest export partners in the EU. Many of the Dutch-backed projects focus on opening new markets for Jordanian companies, such as olive oil, fruit and vegetable, apparel, and cosmetics exports. In addition, these projects are also working to promote investment opportunities for Dutch companies in Jordan.
Politically, both countries will continue to support the Middle East peace process. The Netherlands sees Jordan as an important partner in achieving peace and stability in the region and recognizes Jordan’s important humanitarian role in hosting refugees.
King’s Day is Dutch for “Orange-day” and the color is named after the royal surname Orange-Nassau.
